That's different from direct to garment printing, where a finished blank goes into a press and gets a rectangle of ink on the chest. It's also different from embroidery, where artwork gets reduced to a handful of thread colors and stitched onto an assembled garment. So a design centered in the print area is centered on the panel, not on the finished product. The two only coincide on genuinely flat goods like a poster or a mouse pad.
There's a second, quieter version of the same trap: orientation. Panels aren't all fed through in the same direction. On sublimated socks, the front leg panels come out with the top of your file at the toe, while the back panels come out with the top of your file at the cuff. Generate or upscale to the print area's real pixel dimensions rather than assuming a standard image size will do. Aspect ratio. Every print area has a fixed aspect ratio, and suppliers don't politely letterbox a mismatched file. They stretch it or crop it. Submit a square design to a print area that's three units wide by four tall and you get either a vertically stretched design or one with the top and bottom cut off.
