Best Print on Demand Supplier for Kids T-Shirts in 2026 (Real Costs, Sizes and Print Areas)
Quick answer: on the one youth blank all three suppliers carry, the Gildan 5000B, Printful and Gelato are within 11 cents of each other ($9.88 against $9.99 for S to XL), so price won't pick your supplier for you. Printful is the best default for kids tees if you want back prints, a branded inside label and a toddler range. Printify has by far the widest choice, with dozens of kids and youth blanks. Gelato carries only four kids tees, all front print only, but it wins on colour count and on local production when your buyers are spread across countries. All three are live in ApparelHub today, and every number below was pulled from their live catalogs on October 4, 2026.
Kids tees look like the easiest product in print on demand. Same design, smaller shirt, done. Then three things go sideways: the youth blank costs more than the adult one you were going to discount it against, the "same" blank turns out to be embroidery only at one supplier and print only at another, and the design that filled an adult chest sits in a print area that's a different shape on the youth version.
This is the kids entry in the same series as our t-shirt and baby clothes guides. We connect to all three suppliers, we don't take a cut of anyone's print margin, and we have no affiliate link to protect.
Which print on demand supplier is best for kids t-shirts?
Decide what the shirt has to do first, then where your buyers are, then price.
- Printful if you want a full kids range under one roof: toddler sizes (2T to 5T on the Bella + Canvas 3001T), youth sizes, front and back prints, and a printed inside label so the tag says your brand instead of the mill's. Costs are visible before you build.
- Printify if you want choice. Its catalog lists roughly forty kids and youth items, from Gildan and Bella + Canvas basics to tie-dye, performance and all-over print tees. The trade-off is that base cost isn't in the catalog data, so you see a tee's real cost when you build it, not while you browse.
- Gelato if a lot of your buyers are outside your home market. It produces locally in many countries and offers more colours on the blanks it does carry. The catch is a short list: four kids tees, front print only.
If you sell a school, team or family-event design to buyers in one country, Printful or Printify will usually serve you better. If you sell a cartoon or slogan design internationally, Gelato is worth a look on the two blanks it shares with Printful.
What does a kids t-shirt actually cost from each supplier?
The only fair comparison is on identical blanks. Here's what each supplier returned on October 4, 2026, US pricing.
| Blank | Printful | Gelato | Colours (Printful / Gelato) | Decoration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gildan 5000B youth heavy cotton | $9.88, XS to XL | $9.99 S to XL, $8.69 XS | 13 / 18 | Printed at both |
| Comfort Colors 9018 youth garment-dyed | $15.04, XS to XL | $15.23, XS to XL | 10 / 30 | Printful embroidery only, Gelato front print |
| Bella + Canvas 3001Y youth staple tee | $13.76, S to XL | not stocked | 17 / not stocked | Printed |
| Bella + Canvas 3001T toddler tee | $13.00, 2T to 5T | not stocked | Printed | |
| Gildan 8000B youth performance tee | $8.46, XS to XL | not stocked | 10 / not stocked | Printful embroidery only |
| Printify, any of the above | not published in the catalog | varies by print provider | Front and back |
Two things jump out. On the Gildan 5000B, the price gap is 11 cents, which is noise next to shipping and channel fees. And Gelato prices its XS lower than the rest of the range, which none of the others do. If most of your sales are in the smallest size, that's worth knowing.
Why the Comfort Colors 9018 isn't a like-for-like match
This is the trap in this category, and it's easy to miss because the blank name is identical.
At Printful, the youth Comfort Colors 9018 only offers embroidery placements: a left chest or centre chest stitch area, roughly square. There's no front print option on that blank. At Gelato, the same blank is a front print with a full-size printable area.
So a $15.04 against $15.23 comparison is really an embroidered shirt against a printed one. If your design is a small logo or a name, the Printful version is a premium embroidered product and arguably the better buy. If your design is a full-front cartoon, Printful can't make it on this blank at all, and the comparison is moot. Printful's Gildan 8000B youth performance tee works the same way: embroidery only.
Check the decoration method before you compare price. A supplier switch that looks like a 19 cent saving can quietly turn a printed product into an embroidered one, or fail at the build step because the placement you wanted doesn't exist.
Why does a youth tee cost more than the adult version?
Smaller shirt, smaller price, right? Not on these blanks. Printful's Bella + Canvas 3001Y youth tee is $13.76, while the adult Bella + Canvas 3001 from the same mill is $11.92. The youth version costs more.
The adult 3001 is one of the highest-volume blanks in print on demand, so its production is optimised to the hilt. Youth runs are smaller. Less fabric doesn't translate into a lower base cost.
Two consequences for pricing:
- Don't discount kids tees off your adult price. A common instinct is to price youth $3 to $5 below adult. On the 3001Y that puts you below your adult margin before shipping and fees even come out. Work out the kids price from the kids base cost, using the same method as our pricing guide.
- If cost is the constraint, use the Gildan. The Gildan 5000B at $9.88 is the cheapest printable youth tee in this comparison and cheaper than either Bella option.
Why can't you see Printify's kids tee cost up front?
Printify doesn't put base cost in the catalog data that connected platforms read. Every kids tee we pulled came back without a cost attached, the same as its adult tees, hats and tanks. It's structural rather than careless: the same blueprint is made by several independent print shops at different prices, so there isn't one number for a feed.
The number does exist, and it arrives when you build. Printify returns the real per-variant cost once a product exists on its side, and building a kids tee through ApparelHub does exactly that, so the cost for every colour and size lands on your variants as part of the build. From there, margin tracking works the same as on the other two suppliers, which matters for the reasons in our guide to tracking profit margins.
The limits, stated plainly: it's a build-time answer, not a browse-time one, so price shopping twenty Printify kids tees without building any of them is still a job for Printify's own catalog. And it's base production cost, not shipping or tax.
Where can you actually print on a kids tee?
Placements decide more supplier choices than price does.
- Printful: front, back and a printed inside label on the Gildan 5000B and Bella + Canvas 3001Y.
- Printify: front and back on the kids tees we checked.
- Gelato: front only, on all four kids tees.
If your kids range is a front graphic and nothing else, all three work. If you want a name and number on the back, which is common for team, school and sports designs, Gelato is out. If you want your brand on the neck label instead of Gildan's, Printful is the only one of the three that offers it on these blanks.
Why the print area shape matters
The shape of the print area changes between suppliers even on the same blank. Here's the width to height ratio of the front print area, which tells you whether a design built for one will fit another.
| Blank | Printful | Printify | Gelato |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gildan 5000B | 0.75, tall | 0.83, squarer | 0.75, tall |
| Bella + Canvas 3001Y | 0.83, squarer | not checked | not stocked |
A file built to fill a tall 0.75 area will letterbox or get cropped when the same file goes into a squarer 0.83 area. On an adult tee you can often get away with it. On a youth tee you have less room to lose, and the part that gets cropped is usually the top of the design, right under the collar.
The fix is simple: build the print file to the real print area of the blank you're using, at full resolution, rather than reusing your adult file. Our guide to print ready files covers the sizing in detail.
What should you know about selling kids clothing?
Kids apparel carries obligations that adult tees don't. In the US, children's products generally fall under children's product safety rules, including requirements around testing documentation and tracking information. Your supplier handles the garment and ink side, but you are the seller of record on your storefront, so it's worth reading the rules that apply in each market you sell into before you launch a kids line. We covered the baby end of this in more detail in the baby clothes guide.
Two practical points that come up often:
- Size charts matter more than on adult tees. Youth sizing varies by brand, and parents buy for a growing child. Put each blank's own size chart on the listing rather than a generic one.
- Hoodies are a different conversation. If you extend a kids range into hooded sweatshirts, check the rules on drawstrings in children's upper outerwear, which are stricter than for adults.
What ApparelHub actually does for kids tees
We're the layer that connects your design, your suppliers and your sales channels. Printful, Printify and Gelato are all live, and Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix and TikTok Shop are all live as sales channels.
For a kids range specifically:
- One design, three suppliers. You can build the same design on Printful, Printify and Gelato blanks and compare the real numbers, rather than committing to one supplier on reputation.
- Placement handled per blank. The platform resolves where artwork sits on each blank's real print area, so you aren't guessing at the tall versus square difference above. Still check the mockup before you publish.
- Cost on every variant. Printful and Gelato costs are visible before you build. Printify costs land on your variants when you build. For Printful and Gelato you can also get a pre-order estimate covering production, shipping and tax. Printify doesn't support that estimate, so a landed cost comparison across all three isn't like for like.
- Margin guardrails. Orders that would sell below cost can be held for review instead of going straight to production, which matters on a category where the youth base cost surprises people.
ApparelHub doesn't run an agent for you, and it doesn't have its own AI. If you bring your own agent, it can do this through our Agent API, MCP connector or Claude skill, which are documented on our agents page.
FAQ
Is Printful or Gelato cheaper for kids t-shirts? On the Gildan 5000B, Printful is 11 cents cheaper for S to XL and Gelato is cheaper for XS. On the Comfort Colors 9018 they're 19 cents apart, but Printful's version is embroidered and Gelato's is printed, so it isn't a fair price comparison.
Does Gelato print on the back of kids t-shirts? Not on any of the four kids tees it carries today. They're all front print only. If you need a back print for a name and number, use Printful or Printify.
Does Printful do toddler t-shirts? Yes. The Bella + Canvas 3001T toddler tee comes in 2T to 5T at $13.00 base on the day we checked. Gelato doesn't carry toddler tees.
Why is my youth tee more expensive than my adult tee? Because youth blanks run in smaller volumes. The Bella + Canvas 3001Y youth tee is $13.76 at Printful against $11.92 for the adult 3001. Price kids products from their own base cost, not as a discount off adult.
Can I use my adult design file on a kids tee? Usually not as is. The youth print area is smaller and sometimes a different shape, so an adult file can be cropped or shrunk. Rebuild the file to the youth blank's real print area.
